MAPHIVENI – A movie-like car chase between police officers and a sedan left three people dead and one critically injured.
This, after the driver of the sedan, a silver grey Honda Fit, lost control of it and it rammed into a marula tree.

The accident happened on Saturday at around 1am near a place known as Nduma, about 10 kilometres from Maphiveni Junction along the Lomahasha/Mbadlane Highway also known as the MR3.
The deceased are two men and a female passenger.

The female resided about a kilometre from where the accident happened.
A fourth person, said to be male, is still in hospital in a critical condition.
The vehicle is said to have been moving at such a high speed that upon hitting the tree, even the engine was detached from its body.

 Signalled

Eyewitnesses claimed that the driver of the Honda Fit allegedly drove through a police roadblock despite being signalled to stop.
It is alleged the driver may have been afraid of being nabbed for drink-driving.
Though eyewitnesses interviewed by this publication claimed they saw a police van trailing the Honda Fit, at high speed, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) vehemently disputed this.

At least three eyewitnesses who claimed to have been nearby, in their vehicles, claimed a police van was pursuing the Honda Fit.
This publication has gathered that the vehicle (Honda Fit) is owned by a civil servant but that he was not the one driving at the time but was a passenger.
The occupants of the Honda Fit are said to have been returning from a watering hole where comedian Gedlembane was the main act, according to some of the eyewitnesses of the accident.

The civil servant, who also died, is said to have been working for the Ministry of Home Affairs stationed at Lomahasha Border Gate while a nurse is said to be the only survivor.

An eyewitness said she saw the police van following behind as the Honda Fit driver was trying to navigate the highway.
“It was at night so visibility was not very clear,” she said.
Another motorist, who was also driving nearby, said he knew all the occupants of the vehicle and that they were from nearby communities.
He said the victims were from Lomahasha and driving towards Maphiveni when the driver allegedly avoided the roadblock.

Shocked

He said he was shocked to see the police van in pursuit of the vehicle and wondered why they had not just allowed them to escape.
“It is not like they had killed someone,” he said.
