MBABANE – Patients got the shock of their lives when they stumbled upon a foetus which was dumped at the Mbabane Government Hospital yesterday.

As if strategically planned, the foetus was found below the maternity wing where pregnant mothers deliver their babies. There was a hive of activity at the hospital as police officers from the forensic department retrieved the foetus at around 1pm. The hospital staff, including doctors were also present to witness the scene. It was gathered that the shocking discovery was made by a seven-year-old child who was in the company of her aunt.

Eyewitnesses said it was at around 9am when the shocking discovery was made and immediately the hospital’s security personnel was informed and in turn called the police.
“The child, who was in the company of her aunt, informed her about her discovery and they reported it to the security personnel,” said the eyewitnesses. It was suspected that the foetus was dumped at night or in the wee hours of the morning.

Shocked

When reached for comment on the matter, Director of Health Services, Dr Vusi Magagula said they were shocked by the discovery and were still wondering why the person chose to dump it at the hospital. Dr Magagula further encouraged members of the public to practise safe sex and avoid unwanted pregnancies. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter. Vilakati said police were still investigating.
