MBABANE – A traffic police officer handed himself over to his colleagues after allegedly ploughing into four pedestrians with his car, killing them on the spot.
The incident happened on Saturday night.

This gruesome accident, that has left members of the public reeling from shock, happened at Bethay, near Inyatsi Construction (Pty) Ltd on the MR 18 road. This is the road linking two towns, Matsapha and Mahlanya.

According to impeccable sources, the traffic officer, whose name is known to this publication but cannot be published as he is yet to appear before a court of law, surrendered himself yesterday morning.

Kidnapped

It is said there were allegations that when the accident occurred, the said police officer had been kidnapped by unknown men; however, the car that was allegedly used during his ‘kidnapping’ was found at the scene of the accident- where the four pedestrians died.

The impeccable sources, however, relayed that it would have made sense to them if he was found at the scene where the accident had happened – if he was kidnapped.

They further narrated that when traffic officers checked his breath specimen, yesterday morning, which was hours after the accident, it was found to have no intoxicating substances.

Sources said the officer was travelling towards the Matsapha direction when he suspectedly failed to control the vehicle he was driving.
Efforts to apply brakes seemed not to have worked in his favour as he rammed into the group of people who were walking by the road, who were killed instantly.

Given that there were insinuations of kidnapping, the police Special Crimes Unit, known as Lukhozi has also been roped in to assist law enforcers in getting to the bottom of the matter.

When police were called to the scene after the accident, sources claim that the driver was not found at the scene. It is unknown where he had gone to, though he later surrendered himself the next day.

He is currently kept at Mafutseni Police station.
By the time this report was compiled, information was still scanty. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident.

She said: “He surrendered himself yesterday morning and we are still to investigate whether he was in a sober state of mind when the accident happened.”
In another gruesome accident that shook the country, an ex-member of Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF), while in a drunken stupor, ploughed into a group of seven congregants, leaving four dead.

The gruesome accident occurred at Mahlabatsini, along the D13 Public Road on March 27, 2018; just when congregants of Church of God were returning from attending the day’s service.

Demons

Church of God is headed by Apostle Muzi Manana, who is popular among those who believe he casts out demons.
When the accident happened, it was reported that some of the youth members of the church decided to stay behind and practice for Easter Services.

After practice, while headed to their respective homes, they walked along the not ‘so busy’ public road and just when they were approaching the steep hill leading to KaHlobile, an over-speeding silver grey VW Golf, driven by the soldier, approached and knocked down all seven of  the congregants.

Sibusiso Bhekithemba Dlamini (32), who was based at Phocweni Army Barracks when the accident happened, was said to have been driving from the Matsapha direction when he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a corner and ploughed into the congregants.
