MBABANE – Concentrating in class is becoming impossible for University of Eswatini (UNESWA) students who have not yet received their allowances.

The students, mostly first years, who were in the company of student representative Council (SRC) President Sakhile Ndzimandze stormed the Ministry of Labour and Social Security offices yesterday to demand answers on the issue of their allowances.

Ndzimandze said they were worried that the allowances were not issued up to this time of the year.  “In four weeks’ time we will be writing our examinations to wrap up the academic year,” Ndzimandze said.

According to Ndzimandze, allowances were normally issued on the third week when the university opens.
He said to date, the students had not received anything and were finding it very hard to cope.

Ndzimandze said students felt that they had given the ministry enough time to deal with the matter.
He said most of the students relied on government as they came from very humble backgrounds, while a majority were orphaned and vulnerable.
Ndzimandze said the SRC representatives had been engaging the ministry.

However, he said they were pleased with the ministry’s positive response and were hoping that they would speed up the payments.
