MBABANE – While some pastors overlook the consumption of alcohol by congregants, elders of Melika Jericho Church in Zion have ordered those who imbibe alcohol to leave the church.

Jeremiah Vilakati, the elder of the Vilakati family, openly told congregants that the church would by no means tolerate the consumption of alcohol by congregants. He said it was disheartening that empty beer bottles were found at the place of worship, which showed that some church members imbibed alcohol during the service. As Vilakati said this, some congregants murmured, “what about the used condoms?.” “Alcohol will never be accepted in this church so people must choose between the church and alcohol. A church is a place of worship, which is governed by its principles. If people want to imbibe alcohol, they should not pretend to be Christians and disturb us. We cannot proceed with siguco without addressing the issue of alcohol, which seems to be a problem in the church. If you want to drink alcohol, feel free to join drunkards at the right place and no one will come after you,” he said. Vilakati said alcohol had no purpose except for destroying human life. He warned members of the church to guard themselves against adverts which talked about benefits of alcohol. According to Vilakati, there was no benefit from alcohol except death.

However, scientific research has revealed that having a glass of wine after a meal helps with digestion. “I have heard that certain men from overseas countries met and discussed the benefits of alcohol. They went to the extent of suggesting the amount of alcohol needed in a human body. These are pure lies, which are meant to lure you into drinking,” he said.

Disease

He asked if there was a disease that was ever healed with alcohol. Vilakati made an example of HIV/AIDS, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and tuberculosis, which he said alcohol made them worse as opposed to healing. He told the congregants that the church would have made a big mistake by proceeding with siguco without addressing the issue of alcohol which seemed to be a problem in the church. On another note, Vilakati warned the church members to keep the words of prophecies and principles of the church. He said the angels of the church, which spoke to the founder, kept reminding the elders about the gowns made of sacks. “Make sure you have the gowns made of sacks because the angels of the church keep reminding the elders about them. It is very important to have the gowns because nobody knows why the angels keep reminding the elders about them,” he said. He reminded women to have white head scarves with a red shield. Vilakati said in as much as the church appreciated gowns, which were revealed to the congregants, it was imperative to keep the words of prophecies.
