MBABANE – Asati lutfo! (We are clueless!) These were the words of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Thuli Dladla. This was in relation to the allegations published by South African weekend publication, The Sunday Times, wherein, it alleged that millions belonging to assassinated Libyan President, Muammar Gaddafi’s missing E422 million (US$30m) were in the country.

The minister said her ministry was clueless on these allegations and in a communiqué with the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Lindiwe Sisulu, what was published was not part of it.

“In the communiqué, we did not address what was published in that publication; anyway, their minister (Sisulu) responded well to the allegations,” she said.
Dladla referred further questions to the Government Press Secretary, Percy Simelane – who in yesterday’s publication said: “We have elected to wait until this newspaper publishes evidence.”

Simelane was quoted as having said it was that evidence that would make the story credible to the country.

Waiting

He said former President Zuma was still waiting for evidence to be published by The Sunday Times, relating to a previous article that insinuated that he (Zuma) bought a mansion in Dubai.
“Evidence has not been coming since last year after the publication claimed he owned a house there. We therefore need to be cautious.”

Meanwhile, following the publication of the article by The Sunday Times, a number of publications have picked it up. Talk show radio, 702, hosted Qaanitah Hunter, a political journalist from The Sunday Times relating to the allegations that former South African President, Zuma had moved the millions belonging to the deceased former Libyan leader to hide them in the country.

The Sunday Times reported that Libyan military authorities had asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to help recover the stash of cash, estimated to be about E442m, belonging to Gaddafi, that was now believed to be in Eswatini though no official confirmation has come forth.
Gaddafi died while being chased by rebels in Tripoli in October 2011.

The Sunday Times was unable to get a comment from Zuma’s spokesperson, Vukile Mathabela. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Khusela Diko, confirmed that the president had travelled to Eswatini last month but would not confirm what transpired at that meeting with the country’s authorities or at the subsequent meeting at the airport.

Recover

According to the circulating publications, President Ramaphosa was asked to help recover the millions of dollars belonging to the late Gaddafi, which government sources alleged was hidden at former president Zuma’s Nkandla residence before being secretly moved to Eswatini, earlier this year.
