MBABANE – While police are searching for the gardener who is suspected to have had a hand in the death of two minors, the community of Mahwalala in not convinced that he was alone.

The incensed community members of the area yesterday accosted and heavily assaulted three men whom they accused of having played a role in the death of the teenagers and also being involved in robberies around the area.
Bush knives were used to assault the three men all over their bodies such that they had visible injuries on their backs.

They were locked inside a rented flat at a Matsenjwa homestead where the alleged assault took place for the entire night.
Timile Nhlabatsi and Sebenele Gama, both 13 years old, went missing at Masamketini, in Mahwalala last Saturday.
The duo disappeared after they were last seen in the company of Colani Sihlongonyane, a gardener in the neighbourhood. Despite all fingers pointing to the gardener as the person who allegedly committed the offence, the residents are adamant that there was more to it.

The three men are the first casualties in the quest by the community to dig more into the matter. They were also accused of committing a spate of robberies in the area.
Relating the ordeal, one of the men said it was around 6pm when they came across an Isuzu grey bakkie, which parked across the road on the street they were walking. He said the men introduced themselves as policemen working under the CID department. He said they believed them as they were also carrying a revolver.

He said they were questioned about where they were going before being ordered to turn back.

Grabbed

The so-called CIDs however, demanded that one of the men should come with them. “We left one of our own and while along the way, we changed our minds to check on him and it is when we were also grabbed,” he said.
He said they were taken inside one of the rooms at a Matsenjwa homestead where they were interrogated regarding the on-going burglaries and further told that the truth would come out about the murdered teenagers.
The man said they were again released and while they were leaving the scene, they witnessed one of the men removing geysers from the rented flats.

He said they watched to see what was happening and the man who was removing the geysers asked what they were looking at before calling the others. “They then came after us and took us back to the room where they had locked us in.” He said they then started beating them very hard with the sjambok and bush knives, taking turns.
