MBABANE - While the world is observing Women’s Month, the community of a location in Mbabane is reeling in shock following a brutal assault of a young woman by her boyfriend. Following the assault, *Nonhlan- hla’s face was left disfigured such that both her eyelids were swollen.

The incident allegedly happened on Sunday afternoon. So serious were the injuries sustained by the 19-year- old that her lower lip was slit. The survivor and her boyfriend are live-in lovers and the assault is re- ported to have happened at their place of abode. After the assault which left the young woman bleeding, her boyfriend allegedly locked her inside the house. Assaulted Narrating the events, her aunt al- leged that it was not the first time her niece had been assaulted by the boyfriend, but that it had become a daily occurrence.

The aunt said she was called by one of her niece’s friends to come and rescue Nonhlanhla, who had been re- portedly locked-up by the boyfriend. She said the friend mentioned that due to the injuries inflicted on the survivor, she could die as she was bleeding profusely.  “I was shocked by the statement and immediately went to the police station to seek assistance as I also feared for my life as a woman,” the aunt said.

She said upon reaching the police
station, she was told that a car had already left for Msunduza to attend to another case. She said while she was still at the police station, she managed to get a lift to Msunduza and along the way she came across the police van which she stopped. According to the aunt, she narrated to the police who were on board the van that she was rushing to a scene where her niece had been badly assaulted by her boyfriend.

“As I related the events, the police told me that the person I was referring to was in the police van and was being taken to the Mbabane Government Hospital,” she narrated. She said the police told her that because she was carrying a baby, she could not jump inside the van but should try to follow them to hospital. Further, the aunt said she followed the van to the hospital and left her

niece with one of the doctors as she could not wait any longer because it was getting late, yet she had a child with her. “I requested the doctor to call me if they would not be admitting her.” She said the doctor did not call and she assumed that she had been admitted to the hospital, only to learn the following day that her niece had actually gone back to her boyfriend’s house.

Her aunt said she immediately called the boyfriend, who did not re- spond to her call, thereafter dropping a message. The aunt said she called the police to inform them that Nonhlanhla was back at the boyfriend’s house. She said the police then went back again to fetch her from the flat, where she did not even have medication.

“She was brought back home and in the morning the boyfriend called to tell me that he would be sending a taxi to take her to hospital, where she was expected to collect medication.” Comfortable However, the aunt said by 7:45pm, her niece had not returned home. She said she called the boyfriend who told her that Nonhlanhla said she was comfortable living with him.

When sought for comment, the boy- friend said he was currently busy and promised to get back to this reporter. Meanwhile, comment could not be sought from the police as the survivor had not reported the matter by the time of compiling this report.

The incident comes at a time when local and South African people are reeling from the shock of a case of do- mestic violence between popular stars Babes Wodumo and Mamphintsha. This was after a video was circu- lated on social media showing the female gqom star allegedly being assaulted by her boyfriend. Mampintsha eventually handed himself over to the police and was granted E2 000 bail yesterday. *Not her real name
