PIGG’S PEAK – Have sex workers around Buhleni found a new home? This is the question being asked by Buhleni residents following concerns that sex workers were now occupying a temporary settlement set up by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

It is alleged that the sex workers were now sharing accommodation with some civil servants who use the tents while working at different government projects and establishments.

The place has become so popular that many people around the area know it and refer to it as Emathendeni meaning ‘at the tents’ because the settlement consists of tents.
The tents are pitched near a place where a baby was recently dumped by an unknown woman.
Noteworthy is that sex work is currently illegal in the country.

In 2018, this publication revealed how some sex workers were charging as little as E30.
According to information obtained yesterday, the charge has since increased to E50 or even more.
About four months ago, civil servants under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport set up some tents near the bus rank.
It is this place that sex workers are alleged to have made it a new home with some of them of them living there.

Speaking on condition of anonymity in fear of victimisation, some of the residents working mainly in the town centre said the number of sex workers had increased.
“This is because they no longer have to go to their homesteads but live at the same place with civil servants,” alleged a resident.
Another resident said it was easy to spot the sex workers because they often spent the day asleep in the tents but left during the evening for their work.
