MBABANE – While many people received roses on Valentine’s Day, a 34-year-old man was splashed with a jar of boiling water on the face for not buying anything for his lover.

Valentine’s Day has become synonymous with the exchange of gifts between lovebirds.
Romantic diehards normally exchange cards, flowers, letters or presents with their spouses or partners. They may also arrange romantic meals in a restaurant or night out in a hotel.

However, it was a different story altogether for Sipho Nkambule who was allegedly attacked by his lover for failing to honour his Valentine’s Day promises.
The woman now stands charged with common assault and is due to appear before court.
As such, her name has been concealed until she appears in court.

Narrating the events leading to the misunderstanding, Nkambule (34) alleged that he was from work when all the drama unfolded.
“I came home from work on the day (Valentine’s Day) to find my girlfriend inside the house. She had cooked a special meal for us.

It was a pleasant surprise and we exchanged pleasantries, but everything changed when she asked where her gift was and I told her I did not bring it as it was out of my budget,” alleged Nkambule.  He further alleged that his woman became aggressive and started complaining bitterly. Nkambule alleged that the woman accused him of buying another woman a gift and abandoning her needs.

It could not be ascertained what gift Nkambule had promised to purchase for his girlfriend.
He further alleged that the woman went out to the kitchen and came back with a jar of boiling water and splashed it on his face. Nkambule said he was lucky he did not sustain serious injuries as the water had cooled off by the time it was poured on him.

It is suspected that the woman may have filled the jar with the boiling, did other things for a couple of minutes before allegedly emptying the jar on Nkambule.

The man said he had previously promised his girlfriend to take her out on a date and buy her a surprise gift on Valentine’s Day. When questioned why he had not fulfilled his promise, Nkambule said he could not afford it because he had started a project of building a house and there was no money available to afford the gift, which, again he did not disclose.
