MBABANE – The Royal Commission has finished its task of reviewing salaries of politicians, the judiciary and other officials remunerated from public coffers.

The Royal Commission is led by Phil Mnisi and was appointed in April last year. The commission was envisaged to have completed its task by last September; however, it was not the case and it had its tenure extended to October 22, 2018. Even under the new deadline, the commission could not complete its task and received another extension that lapsed last Thursday, January 31.

This publication has it in authority that the commission has completed determining the terms and conditions of service for politicians. Impeccable sources have stated that the team is waiting to meet the principal of the assignment. “They have completed their responsibility; but need to meet the authorities of the land to present it to them,” the source said.

extension

Known as the Commission of Enquiries into the Terms and Conditions of Service for the Members of Parliament and Statutory Boards and Commissions, it is yet unknown how long the third extension assigned to the team of seven members will be.

Chairing the committee is Eswatini Sugar Association CEO Phil Mnisi, while senior Attorney Sidumo Mdladla is the secretary. The rest of the members are REDI Director Dr Sikhomba Gumbi, former Principal Secretary Nomathemba Hlope, Standard Bank’s Mvuselelo Fakudze, Chartered Accountant Kobla Quashie and Joe Shilubane.

The commission was appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III in April 2018, following calls which were made by emaSwati during the Sibaya national dialogue that the terms and conditions of service of members of Parliament, including Cabinet, should be determined by the King.

Announcing the commission was former Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini, who at the time said it was expected to submit its report by the end of March 31, 2018. In carrying out its duties, the commission was expected to review the terms and conditions of service for politicians of the 11th Parliament, statutory boards and commissions.

comment

None of the members wished to be drawn to comment on the matter. They claimed that they were not the right people to comment on the matter. Efforts to get comment from Mnisi also proved futile as his phone also rang unanswered when called yesterday.
