CHAOS AT TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION MEET

MANZINI – A meeting called by the Swaziland Local Transport Association (SLTA), Manzini Branch almost ended nasty as the members rebelled against the executive committee.

In fact, inside sources said the meeting was called off as the public transport operators caused total disorder during the gathering, which was held at Swazi Commercial Amadoda Hall at KaKhoza yesterday.

The insiders said the bone of contention was that the public transport operators no longer recognised the executive committee members. They claimed that they were in office illegally as they last had elections over a decade ago.
“This is much against the association’s constitution which clearly states that elections should be conducted after three years,” said some of the aggrieved public transport operators.

As a result, they demanded that the association should call an elective annual general meeting (AGM) within seven days.
“Failing which, we will stop paying rank fees to the association,” they said.

According to the operators, they pay about E20 per day to the association for a vehicle to rank at the bus rank. They said the money was collected by the bus rank marshals.

The operators revealed that they decided to cause chaos during the meeting because its agenda had long-term issues.

Recognised

Their argument was that they could not discuss long-term issues of the association with an executive committee which they no longer recognised.
“We will only discuss such issues once there is a new executive committee in office,” the inside source said.

Furthermore, the operators said they were also not content with the fact that the last meeting which was called by the association was ages ago and now it wanted to discuss long-term issues.

Meanwhile, SLTA Manzini Branch Chairman Derrick Dlamini confirmed that he had to call off the meeting because there was total disorder.
He said the members raised issues which were not on the agenda and would not listen to the executive committee.
“Instead of following the agenda, they all decided to talk at the same time,” the chairman said.

On another note, he said elections would be held but was not precise when exactly they would be conducted. He said the process had to start with the national body and thereafter, it would conduct the elections in branches.

Dlamini said the delay was caused by the fact that the association’s constitution was amended when the name of the organisation changed from Swaziland Local Kombi Association to SLTA.
