MBABANE – Experience has worked for Maphalaleni Member of Parliament Mabulala Maseko as he managed to admit 43 pupils to a newly-built school in the area.

Not  only did Maseko admit the pupils to the school but he also kept them busy in class in the absence of teachers. Maseko, who retired a few years back from the teaching profession after joining politics, confirmed on Friday that he admitted the pupils to the school. He was heading Eluvinjelweni High School before he was elected into Parliament in 2013. He said they were mandated by the Ministry of the Education and Training to admit the pupils in the absence of the head teacher as the ministry was still in the hiring process.

“We have admitted 27 boys from our local primary schools,” he said. Maseko revealed that the Teaching Service Commission had posted a head teacher who was a deputy in one of the best schools in Mbabane to head the school. He said the head teacher was in the process of sorting the curriculum and timetables before she could request for relevant teachers from the commission. Asked about his admission criteria, Maseko said the pupils were admitted as per the usual procedure. “We admitted all pupils irrespective of their results. We did not opt for the whizz-kids because all pupils deserve equal rights to education,” he said

Asked about the effects of the new school in the area, Maseko mentioned that pupils from three royal kraals would no longer travel 12 kilometres to school. The royal kraals included Nsingweni, Maphalaleni and Mcengeni. Maseko revealed that the school, which was built by the community through sponsorship from the Ministry of the Education and Training as well as Micro Projects, cost over E2 million. The school comprises classrooms, teachers’ houses and toilets. Some of the pupils who were found with with Maseko in class said they were introduced to normal school regulations.

When sought for comment, the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Simanga Mamba, stated that the commission was in the process of posting teachers to all the nine new schools across the country. Mamba said lessons in these schools were likely to commence this week as head teachers were done with the curriculum and the timetables. “I hope teachers have all submitted their requests for teachers which means teachers will be posted to all the schools this week,” Mamba said.
