MBABANE – A combination of learned friends and former councillors have been appointed to probe the operations of the Matsapha Town Council. The appointments were announced yesterday by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Prince Simelane.

He announced the five-member commission that will probe the affairs of the municipality following its highly publicised infighting which went on for over two months since November last year. The commission will be chaired by Lungile Magagula, who is a legal advisor for the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC), while Attorney Mzwandile Dlamini has been appointed as secretary.

Former mayors in Benito Jones and Ayanda Sigudla also form part of the commission and have been appointed members.
Jones was once a mayor for the Municipal Council of Mbabane while Sigudla held the same position for the Manzini Municipality in 2017.
Completing the five-member commission is former President of the Swaziland Federation of Labour (SFL), Zibuse Simelane who is also a member.
During a press conference, the minister shared a government gazette which contained details of the appointment of the five members.

Gazette

According to the gazette, published as Legal Notice No.06 of 2019, the commission shall inquire into whether the council, councillor or an official has failed to observe and perform any of the duties and powers conferred or imposed upon it by the provisions of the Urban Government Act, 1969 or any other law regarding the operations of the Matsapha Town Council.
