PIGG’S PEAK – Girls have taken the lead at Mhlatane High School.

The female pupils, Ziyanda Mamba and Lindeka Tfwala from the school, are among the top performers in the country. Ziyanda obtained 93 per cent aggregate while Lindeka got 90 per cent. When asked why the male pupils had not performed as well, Ziyanda jokingly said they were ‘sleeping’. She credited her success to the motivation by the Head teacher, Dr Mandla Dlamini, whom she said had been motivating her since Form I. She said this inspired her to work extra hard, and that she started doing so long before the examinations.

Ziyanda wants to pursue a career in Dentistry. Lindeka also credited her success to hard work, adding that she was also pushed by her mother to study harder. When reached for comment, the head teacher said he was happy with the performance of the two girls. Dlamini revealed that the girls were also top performers at primary school and both obtained Merit passes in Grade VII. He also revealed that they were both from the same primary school known as The Peak Nazarene.

When asked why male pupils were not among the top performers, Dlamini said this changed depending on the year. The head teacher said he was so far pleased with the performance of the girls and hoped that they would continue with their hard work even at senior classes. The two girls are also prefects. He said during the previous year, boys appeared to have also performed very well. Dlamini, however, also highlighted that many pupils generally, not only at his school, were disturbed by social media. “They spend a lot of time on social media,” he noted.
