MBABANE – “I have suffered abuse at the hands of my husband for the past five years.”

This was the submission of the woman who stands accused of stabbing her husband, identified as Sizwe Kunene, to death. Cebile Maphosa of Meleti in the northern Hhohho, is reported to have stabbed her husband to death after an argument. The incident is said to have happened at a place known as Meleti under Ndzingeni Inkhundla. In her application for bail, which has been filed under a certificate of urgency, Maphosa narrated how her husband allegedly abused her.

Family

“I have been physically abused by my husband for the past five years and we even attempted to resolve same through mediation by family members. This, however, did not yield any tangible results,” submitted Maphosa. Narrating the events leading to her arrest, Maphosa stated that in early January 2019, she had an argument with her husband concerning his alleged extra-marital affairs with some women from Meleti. She informed the court that during the argument, her husband became physically abusive and assaulted her to the point that she even collapsed. Maphosa claimed that while trying to nurse the injuries, her husband kicked and headbutted her.

Knife

“I ran to the kitchen where there was a knife on the table. I pulled the knife in an attempt to scare him away but he rushed towards my direction and got himself injured,” said Maphosa.
She averred that she never intended to kill her husband despite that he was abusive to him. “I never intended to kill my husband as I loved him dearly and to demonstrate that I loved him dearly, I would always forgive him when he apologised for beating me during the subsistence of our marriage,” submitted the accused. She contended that her continued incarceration was prejudicial to her children who were solely dependent on her. Maphonsa submitted that there were two children born of the marriage between her and her husband.
