MBABANE – The Mbabane Government Hospital was able to handle the mothers who flocked to the Maternity Ward to give birth on Christmas Day.

As a result, a total of 21 babies were born at the hospital, which was the highest in the country. Nationally, the number of babies recorded was 68, which shows an increase of nine babies when compared to Christmas babies who were born in 2017. The figures were revealed yesterday by the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Simon Zwane. It was reported that some of the mothers travelled from as far as Lavumisa to give birth in Mbabane.

Closure

The hospital was more than ready to welcome the expectant mothers following the closure of the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital Maternity Ward which is currently undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen in mid-January 2019. By noon on Christmas Day, there were already 14 babies born at the Mbabane Government Hospital, which was during a visit by the Minister of Health, Lizzy Nkosi. The minister observed that a majority of the mothers were young, but cautioned them to take good care of their babies and advocated that they breastfeed.

“Do not rush to giving them formula as we all know that breast milk is the best,” said Nkosi. The minister said the mothers who had given birth on Christmas day had made history because the day also fell when the country was celebrating the Incwala holiday. She informed the new parents that they had brought the country true Christmas gifts and that their children would be future ministers, doctors and nurses among other professions. The second highest number of births was recorded at the Hlatikhulu Government Hospital where 14 babies were born. The ministry reported that there were seven boys and the same number of girls.
