MBABANE – A two-day nationwide police operation saw the arrest of 116 people including some who were on the law enforcers’ wanted list.

The highest number of people arrested during operation ‘BASADI’ was that of people found in possession of cannabis as 45 people were arrested. Those arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were 32 and 20 people were arrested for trading without licences.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service, through their Gender Network, conducted this operation in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women and children and in compliance with a Resolution taken by the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) to combat this scourge.

This operation is held twice a year, during the months of May and November and raids and roadblocks were conducted in all the four regions of the country. The operation was conducted from November 28 to 30, simultaneously, by all SARPCCO member countries.

The objective of the operation was to arrest wanted persons for offences of violence against women and children as well as offenders for other crimes that contribute to gender based violence.

According to the police, 70 hectares of cannabis were destroyed and 76kg was seized from suspects. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the arrests. “Even after the operation we will continue to look for people who are on our wanted list. We are aiming to have an incident-free festive season so the nation should know we will be vigilant,” she said.
