NKOMAZI– Everytime his name was mentioned, it would send shivers down the spines of criminals.

This was none other than crack detective Superintendent Solomon ‘Solo’ Mavuso, who has since passed away.
Mavuso (49) is reported to have succumbed to heart and kidney related illnesses on Monday around 3pm at the Mbabane Clinic.

Solo, as Mavuso was popularly known, was the head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Mbabane Police Station (Desk Officer).

Treatment

According to his brother, David, the senior police officer had been ill for the past six months.  David said before he (Solo) started receiving treatment at the Mbabane Clinic, he was once admitted to the Mbabane Government Hospital and was discharged in September.

“He has been in and out of hospital and the doctor informed us that his illness had to do with the heart and kidneys,” said David.
Solo, who joined the Royal Eswatini Police in the early 90s, leaves behind his wife and seven children. The youngest is four years old.
The ace detective was the fourth born in a family of seven.

“The family is still to meet and decide on the date of his burial but it might be this coming weekend,” said his brother.
During his lifetime, Solo handled a litany of high profile cases.

He was part of the team of senior police officers who investigated the murder of shrewd businessman and football administrator Victor Gamedze. The investigations by Solo and other officers led to the arrest of businessman Sipho Shongwe, who is currently fighting for his release from custody through bail.

Solo was also the principal investigator into the bombing of the First National Bank (FNB) Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at Solani’s in Msunduza.
He was also the lead investigator in the murder case where Pastor Themba Matsebula allegedly killed his wife.
The man of the cloth stands accused of murdering his wife Funekile, by allegedly slitting her throat and burning her in a car.

The top detective was also the one who investigated the murder case of Prosecutor Stanley Dlamini, who was killed at Msunduza. Investigation into this matter led to the arrest of Nelisa Hlatjwako, who is currently out on bail.
