MANZINI – Surely, Bishop Bhekibandla Vilakati is thanking the Lord and his ancestors after he miraculously cheated death during a broad daylight robbery in South Africa.

Vilakati claimed that he lost about E80 000 during the incident which almost claimed his life.
The money was offerings which were made during an all night prayer service he had attended in South Africa over the past weekend. The incident took place in Daveyton at around 12:30pm last Sunday.

The bishop, who confirmed the incident, said he was among three passengers in his black BMW X5 SUV. He said they were on their way back home from attending the all night prayer service in one of his branches in the same township when the hijackers struck.

He said after driving for about five kilometres from where the service was held, a Toyota Quantum kombi overtook their BMW when they approached a four-way stop sign.

The bishop said suddenly three men quickly alighted from the kombi and ran towards their car.

Pistols

He said two of the men were armed with pistols. He said the unarmed robber opened the door of the driver’s seat and ordered the driver to step out of the vehicle, further assaulting him with fists in the face. Meanwhile, he said one of the armed robbers ran towards the passenger seat, which he was occupying and pointed a gun at him before ordering him to step out of the vehicle as well.

He said in the meantime, the third man, who was also armed with a pistol, was forcing the two passengers in the back seat to get out of the car.
In a bid to buy more time hoping that other motorists who use the same road could come to their rescue, the bishop said he resisted alighting from the vehicle. However, he said upon seeing the robber breeching the gun, he swiftly alighted but stood by the passenger door.

The man of God claimed that while wondering about what was happening, one of the robbers pushed him.
“The robber shouted at me saying I should stay out of his way before aiming the gun to my chest. He pulled the trigger and it went off,” he said.
Immediately, the bishop said his ears were blocked and he could not see anything. In the midst of all that, he claimed that the robbers drove off in his car, leaving them stranded on the road.
