MBABANE – Storms which lasted for almost an hour left a disaster trail at Siphofaneni Constituency on Monday, rendering over 170 people homeless.
At least 25 homesteads, a police post at kaNgcamphalala and KaMkhweli Primary School were affected.

In some of the homesteads, structures completely collapsed. The most affected chiefdom was at Ngevini, where about 14 structures collapsed and there were a total of 58 beneficiaries who received aid yesterday.

Siphofaneni Member of Parliament Mduduzi Simelane was running around the entire day yesterday with a team from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to try and assist the affected families.

In an interview, the MP spelled disaster, adding that he was confused on what was going to happen to all the affected victims.
MP Simelane said he woke up as early as 7am to conduct a survey on the damage and the NDMA team found him on the field.
He said his fears were that a number of homesteads were affected, yet the assistance was limited.

According to MP Simelane, they managed to visit chiefdoms which include Ngevini (KaNgcamphalala) and KaMkweli. The Siphofaneni legislator said other affected areas included Maphilingo, Nceka and Madlenya.

He said the sad part was that all the affected families were poverty stricken and had no plan B.
He said they managed to pitch tents for families whose structures collapsed as means of providing them with temporary shelter while they sought for more help.
