PIGG’S PEAK – When a pupil resisted having his hair cut at Mhlatane High School, he ended up with his hand injured following a scuffle with a teacher.

The Form II pupil had to be treated at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital after he was injured by a pair of scissors during a scuffle with his teacher.
On Tuesday, several pupils had their hair forcefully cut to conform with school regulations.

They were left with part of their hair cut as a way of forcing them to shave it all at barbershops.
Yesterday, the situation, however, turned bloody when a pupil attempted to flee while refusing to have his hair cut. The teacher is then alleged to have given chase and caught up with the pupil, and a scuffle ensued.

Struggled

According to the pupil, who spoke on condition of anonymity, he injured his hands while they struggled.
He also alleged that the teacher held him by the neck as a way of restraining him.
The pupil had about three notable cuts on his left hand for which he had to be treated at the hospital.

He then returned to the school after receiving treatment. His medical note has the words, ‘Sustained injury after being assaulted by teacher’ inscribed on it, which were handwritten by a medical officer. This is the narration of events the pupil allegedly gave the medical staff.
The Head teacher at Mhlatane High School, Dr Mandla Dlamini, disputed the version which was given by the pupil.

Dlamini said the pupil had been trying to flee and that he accidently injured himself while his hair was being cut.
The head teacher said it was unfortunate that the pupil had used the situation to seek sympathy yet all the pupils had already been informed to have their hair cut.

Dlamini said all the pupils with long hair had been informed to have it cut but that many of them still kept it longer.
“You are free to come to the school and see the actual situation as we have nothing to hide,” said the head teacher.
