LOBAMBA – Thirteen years later, the constitutional provision of electing four women into Parliament has finally been adhered to.

Yesterday marked history for the 11th Parliament, where they nominated 20 women from the country’s four regions.
This was the first step in fulfilling Section 95 and 86 of the Constitution of Eswatini, of electing four women into the House if the female representation was under 30 per cent of those elected after a general election.

Yesterday, the Members of Parliament elected five women from each region, a process that took over five hours.
In alphabetical order, the MPs from the Hhohho Region were the first to cast their ballots.

Elections and Boundaries Commission Legal Advisor Lungile Magagula, was the first to take the MPs through what was expected of them according to the Election of Women Members of the House of Assembly Act No. 9 of 2018.
First to be nominated was former Pigg’s Peak MP Hlobisile Ndlovu.

She eventually emerged as the front contender in the Hhohho Region as she was able to amass 117 points followed by her Secondary Elections rival Nokunceda Bujela, who got 88 points.

As explained by the elections officers, each member of the House could only nominate not more than five candidates from their region.
The candidate who received the first preference was given 10 points, the second one nine, the third eight points, the fourth gained seven points while the fifth and final choice was only able to amass six points.

As much as Ndlovu amassed 117 points, people were quick to point out that the high marks were not a reason to celebrate.
This is because during the final rounds of the elections, the votes are expected to come from all the 59 MPs and not just the regional nominations.
However, the woman of the day was Thobile Dlamini from the Manzini Region, as she was able to gain 127 points which were the highest from all the 24 nominees.
