Today marks the beginning of a new era in the corridors of power.

Expectations are high that by close of business today, the country will have a new prime minister following the call by His Majesty the King for the nation to converge at Sibaya.
Preceding this, it must be noted that the appointments by the King to Senate and some of the candidates from the electorate, comprise of what looks to be an arsenal very capable of resolving the socio-economic challenges facing this country. A good number of seats look set to be occupied by a wealth of academic, corporate, public and entrepreneurial acumen, which ignites a glimmer of hope that solutions could arise for a government that seemed to have run out of ideas. It now boils down to the appointment of the captain of the ship and the selection of the Cabinet team.

It must be said though, that the best armoury in the world cannot win a war without a strong political will from the top, accompanied by full buy-in and the commitment of the generals and foot-soldiers working in concert to execute a well thought out strategy to save us from ourselves. This presents the new team with the unenviable task of uniting a nation unsettled by a myriad of challenges that are no less than the rising cost of living, a cash flow crisis, lack of investment, high unemployment and exorbitant taxes, which have pitted the government against the people. This requires of the new generals to work quicker, harder and do more with very much less in the pocket, because the nation is adamant that the salaries and perks afforded to their predecessors, were not only incommensurate with their service delivery, but were beyond the country’s means.

However, the first hurdle to be overcome is the emerging evidence that exposes how Members of Parliament accepted money from those seeking to become senators, which has seriously tarnished the image of the 11th Parliament, tampered with the trust of the people and pierced the hopes of a nation that deserves a fresh positive start. Only a full blown investigation that would bring all culprits to book could revive our faith in what this new government has to offer. We thank His Majesty for the appointment of the new head of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), who should have no time to take a seat as he pursues answers from our new lawmakers. It is embarrassing that some well respected MPs have admitted to accepting money but see nothing of it. The last thing this country needs is to be served by a dishonourable group of people who can only make things worse than they already are.
