MBABANE – Congratulations are in order to you all! This is the message from National Commissioner of Police Isaac Magagula to 217 junior officers, who will be smiling all the way to the bank on pay-day this month following their promotion.

It is understood that the promotions have not been made public because of the country’s financial crisis and all police officers have reportedly been informed not to speak about them in any other platform.

However, some of the promoted officers told this publication that even though they had been promoted, they were not happy that their civil servant brothers and sisters were being ignored.

“We have been told that the country is in a financial crisis and belt-tightening should be enforced, which means this should apply to everyone. Everyone must feel the pinch of the financial crisis,” said the junior police officers.

The elevation of the junior officers from the ranks of sergeant to assistant inspector and constable to sergeant happens at a time when government has refused to offer civil servants a salary increase above zero per cent.

Also, the promotions have been effected despite a freeze on promotions, hiring and creation of new posts that was announced by Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service Evart Madlopha.

The Times of Swaziland newspaper has managed to see a copy of a communiqué from the police chief, addressed to all headquarters branches, all regional police stations, Ngonini OSSU, police posts and border posts.

In the communiqué, which is dated September 11, 2018, Magagula says the promotions are with effect from September 1, 2018.
“Following the announcement of promotions covering the rank category of Inspector and above as Phase I, the National Commissioner of Police hereby announces Phase II of the promotions covering officers in the junior rank categories of Sergeant and Assistant Inspector, respectively, who were not included in the previously announced promotions as their respective cases were still being processed,” reads the communiqué. In Phase I, those who were promoted were senior officers and their promotion is also effective September 1, 2018.
