MBABANE – Out of seven outgoing cabinet ministers, who gave it another try in the national elections, six of them had luck on their side.

The unlucky one who could not make it to the secondary elections was Minister of Education and Training Dr Phineas Magagula, who was nominated under the Lomahasha Inkhundla for the position of Member of Parliament.
Beating the minister hands down was a female candidate by the name of Zanele Mashaba.

The Primary Elections for Magagula’s constituency took place at various polling stations including Mbokojweni Primary School, but the main action was at Lomahasha Central High School, where over 1 000 voters braved the hot weather and queued to vote.
Worth noting during the voting was that most of the voters were young people who were seemingly eager to select their favourite candidates as they had to be controlled by police officers now and again because they were constantly pushing and shoving while trying to make their way into the polling centre.

Magagula, a teacher by profession, was up against nine other hopefuls who included former Senator Meninjeni Mahlalela.
The rest of the candidates were Sabelo Khoza, Sibusiso Magagula, Jimson Mahlalela, Maxwell Mahlalela, Elmon Mazibuko, Sethabile Mkhabela and Vusumuzi Msibi.
The rest of the cabinet ministers, who made it through to the next phase of the elections, were Phiwayinkhosi Mabuza, Mduduzi ‘Small Joe’ Dlamini, David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, Owen Nxumalo, Moses Vilakati and Jabulani ‘Buy Cash’ Mabuza.
The elections also saw candidates who were part of the 10th Parliament crashing out and losing to new faces in the political scene.

Some of the well-known former MPs who crashed out included Mduduzi Sitezi Dlamini, Bambumuti Sithole, Esther Dlamini, Michael Masilela and Phesheya Hlatjwako, to name a few.
Sithole lost the race to businessman Mbuso Mvubu, who is a director of a soccer team known as Ludzeludze Young Brothers during the elections which took place at Mbekelweni Umphakatsi.

Fame

Fame also proved to be not a winning tool for some candidates as they did not make it despite that they were well-known in various circles including music, fashion, sports and others.
These included gospel artist Zaga Dlamini, who was running in the Indvuna Yenkhundla category under Dvokodvweni Inkhundla and ACASWA President Mzwakhe Myeni, who was also vying for the position of Indvuna Yenkhundla under Nkilongo.
It was also a bad day at the office for candidates who once made it to Parliament including former Speaker Sikakadza Matsebula, Machawe Mavuso and Rogers Mamba.
