SITEKI – A movie-like scene unfolded just before midnight in Siteki on Saturday, when a vehicle rammed into a shop resulting in the collapse of the front part of the structure.
The accident occurred at the T-junction near Siteki Hotel, right at the entrance to Siteki Town Centre.

According to witnesses, a navy blue Mazda sedan rammed into a Stop sign in full speed and then rolled before landing with impact on the entrance of a nearby shop.
“Apparently, the driver accelerated instead of stopping, since there was a Stop sign,” said a witness.
Another witness said he was enjoying drinks at Siteki Hotel when he saw the vehicle ‘literally flying’.

“The vehicle was coming from the Lubombo Central School direction and it did not stop yet there is a t-junction,” narrated the witness.
After the accident, police arrived at the scene and found the wrecked vehicle upside down.

“The driver was not found at the scene and only a female passenger was found trapped in the wreckage. She was rushed to Good Shepherd Mission Hospital for treatment,” said a source.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba, said that the driver fled immediately after the accident.
“We are appealing to him to hand himself over to the police,” said Mamba.

He added that when assessing the accident scene, police discovered some beer bottles which he said were an indication that they fell from the vehicle when it overturned.
Meanwhile, sources close to the police revealed that the mother of the driver visited the police station yesterday morning.
She is said to have told the officers that the driver was her son but she did not know his whereabouts.

The mother is said to have also informed the police that her son was not the owner of the vehicle but it belonged to his friend.
On another note, the manager of the shop which was damaged due to the accident, said he did not have the estimates of the total damages.
“We are still waiting for assessors to determine the damage,” he stated in a telephone interview but refused to give his name.
