KALANGA – A snakebite that had completely healed may 20 years later result in the amputation of the victim’s leg.

Muzi Sithole may have to face this unfortunate scenario following an encounter which he experienced when he was four years old, in 1996.
Muzi, who is now 26 years old, went to Pretoria, South Africa for medical attention which he and his family had considered successful.

“Two years after the incident, when I was in Grade One, I was sent to a hospital in SA where I had chunks of flesh cut from my thigh and pasted onto my leg to cover the bone because it was bare,” he said.
He said when he returned from the hospital he continued with his education and even did some training as a motor mechanic.

Proof

Muzi insists he had been fine and added that proof of this was the fact that he was even playing soccer without any challenges.
Since Sithole was in great pain, his sister Khanyisile spoke on his behalf during the interview.

“He was working at a garage in Matsapha until recently when the wound developed complications and made it difficult for him to continue working,” she said.
She said the family decided to fetch Muzi from his rented flat in Matsapha because he was failing to cope as he suffers a lot of pain and loses a lot of blood because the tissue that is growing from the wound is oozing with blood. “I was shocked to see that the wound has become this serious because when I last saw him in December he looked fine.” Khanyisile said his brother told them that when the flesh started growing from the wound eight months ago, he thought it was normal as he hoped it would cover over up the bone tissue which was partially exposed.
