MALKERNS – A hippopotamus’s vicious attack on a Jericho evangelist has left four children without a father and a woman widowed.

Vusi Dlamini, an employee of Rhodes Food Group (RFG), died on Monday night while on duty after he was attacked and killed by the hippopotamus at Malkerns. The incident happened at around 10:30pm while Dlamini and a colleague were reportedly on duty changing water sprinklers.

According to Sibongile Magagula, who spoke on behalf of Dlamini’s widow, Vusi was carrying out his duties when the accident happened. Magagula narrated that they were informed that the hippo charged at Dlamini and his colleague who ran in different directions.

She said the animal ran after Dlamini and there were suspicions that he might have sprinted towards the direction of where it had left its calves.
Magagula said they were informed that the hippo eventually caught up with Dlamini whereafter it bit the right side of his stomach.
The attack did not end there.

According to Magagula, the hippo reportedly sunk its teeth directly into his stomach, leaving his intestines exposed. She stated that they were told that he died on the spot as there was no one to assist him.
Magagula stated that Dlamini was a father of four children aged 10, seven, five and three.

She added that his wife was unemployed. She said that he was also an evangelist in the red gown sect under Bishop Bhekibandla Vilakati.
Magagula said the Dlamini family was yet to meet to discuss funeral arrangements.
Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the incident.
