PIGG’S PEAK – Government may not have money for civil servants’ salary increments but there is enough for lawsuits.

Senior Magistrate Siphosini Dlamini tipped a suspect, Mlungisi Gulwako, that government had enough money for lawsuits.
This was after Gulwako, who appeared before the magistrate with three others, alleged he had been assaulted by police officers on the day he was arrested.

Gulwako appeared before the magistrate yesterday. He alleged he was assaulted by police officers while at the police station but the magistrate asked him why he did not mention this when he first appeared.
Dlamini told Gulwako that had he mentioned this on the first day of his court appearance, he would have recorded it in his notes. “Police officers have no right to assault anyone,” he said.

He told Gulwako that he should sue the government even if the amount was over a billion Emalangeni as that kind of money was available.

Dlamini said the only time government said there was no money was when it was needed for civil servants’ salary increments, adding that it only offered zero per cent increment.

Gulwako and the two others he appeared with were remanded to custody. Cases of suspects being assaulted at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station are not uncommon.

Over a year ago, several protestors claimed they were allegedly assaulted by police officers during a strike at the Swaziland Plantation.
The matter was reported to the police at the time and published in both major local publications.

A woman arrested for theft also alleged that she was attacked by police officers while at the police station.
Two men were also recently arrested over a month ago for assaulting police officers but they also claimed they had been beaten by the police officers.

The two appeared before Magistrate Dlamini after one of them was arrested for theft of eggs while his friend had been taken in for interfering with the police while on duty.
