MBABANE – It is all gloom and doom for five students of Swaziland Christian University who had hoped to graduate for a Diploma in two weeks’ time.

This follows a list that the institution erroneously released; which contained names of these students under those that will be graduating on July 27.
The students had already engaged tailors to design their outfits and graduation gowns when they were told that they would no longer be graduating.

The news was delivered to them yesterday morning, allegedly by the head of department. Some of the students who were approached by this reporter said they had still not come to terms with what they were told. “We have invested so much in this event.

We have invited our relatives and have told everyone who cared to listen that we will be graduating,” they said. They said they failed to get a clear explanation why there was a sudden turn of events from the initial arrangement that they would graduate.

The students revealed that when they enrolled at the institution they had applied for a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science. “We went through this programme and completed it. If things were going on well at SCU we would have long graduated.”

They alleged that when it transpired that their graduation was indefinite; they decided to apply for an extension so that they pursued a Degree in the same programme.
As things began to work out at SCU, it was announced that the institution would be hosting its long-awaited graduation, which involves over 200 students.

The main argument brought by the students is that at no stage were they informed that when one extended into the degree programme they would not graduate for the Diploma they would have completed. The Swazi News is in possession of a copy of the list that is said to have been circulated among the students for the purposes of confirming if their names were correctly spelt.
