PIGG’S PEAK – Security is on high alert at Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini’s homesteads following an attempt by three heavily-armed men to assassinate him on Wednesday night.

In a movie-like incident, the armed men are said to have bungled a young man, aged 25, into their car and ordered him to show them the prime minister’s home at Ndzingeni, in the northern part of the country.
The would-be-assassins were reportedly armed with automatic assault rifles, suspected to be AK47s, as described by the young man. He narrated to the Times SUNDAY that the three men had guns in between their thighs.

BULLETS AROUND BODIES

They also had bullets wrapped around their bodies and the firearms were loaded with magazines, he said.
He mentioned that he could not identify the type of guns they carried but they appeared longer than the common R4 rifles normally used by police officers.
Following the incident, police officers have set up camp at the prime minister’s home in Ndzingeni.

His home was a hive of activity as several senior police officers were seen at the homestead keeping guard.
The men who allegedly wanted to kill the prime minister were four in total – one was an unarmed driver who was light in complexion - while the three others, all armed, were dark.
The young man was reportedly walking towards the direction of the premier’s home when one of them alighted from the car and pounced on him.

Narrating his ordeal, he said he tried to wrestle with him but another one also alighted from the same vehicle to help him. They eventually overpowered him.
He said the second man who alighted from the car held him by his shirt before pushing him into the car, where he was ordered to take instructions.

He said he was threatened with death if he ever tried to disturb their mission. He said they told him that they allegedly wanted the premier dead, but did not disclose the motive behind the intended assassination.
The three armed men, according to the witness, wore long black jackets and hats, which covered their cheeks and heads.

“They spoke a language which I did not understand. However, the driver spoke SiSwati fluently. As a result, he (driver) was used as a translator,” said the man who witnessed the attempted assassination of the third most important person in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Upon reaching Dlamini’s home, one of the gunmen is said to have jumped over the fence, while carrying a rifle and pointing it in different directions as if he was ready for war.
This particular gunman is said to have first walked around the compound as if searching for someone, apparently the prime minister, but did not find him.

He was reportedly later joined by his two companions in the search while, according to the 25-year old man, the driver remained in the car.
He said they passed a rondavel, which used to be occupied by the prime minister’s late mother, and walked fast towards a house they believed he (PM) was inside.

TRIED TO PEEP THROUGH WINDOWS

They reportedly tried to peep through closed windows to see if they could be able to see him seated or moving up and down the sitting room.
At this time, he was held up by one of the men, with his hands tied behind his back with what looked like a shoelace.

It could not be ascertained how they knew that the prime minister was these days frequenting his parental home at Ndzingeni, because he has several residences in the country.
He said there were reports that the prime minister was to host a thanksgiving ceremony yesterday, to honour the Almighty God for healing him from his sickness, which, at some point, confined him to bed at the Intensive Care Unit of the Mbabane Government Hospital.
