STANDERTON, SOUTH AFRICA – A man of Eswatini brutally met his death after he was strangled with his waist belt and necktie during a suspected carjacking in South Africa.

His ruthless attackers then dumped his body next to the road. The man’s unresponsive body was found by a herdsman who was checking a fence along Leandra Road in the Mpumalanga Province town of Standerton last Tuesday.
Immediately after he stumbled upon the dead body, the herdsman reportedly called personnel of a local security company, who in turn called Standerton police at around 10am. When the officers eventually arrived at the crime scene, they learnt that the victim had multiple facial fractures, indicating that he was heavily battered. There were also lacerations around his neck. Also found around the scene were a knotted waist leather belt and necktie, which were allegedly used by the attackers to strangle the man before they took off with his car.

Police were able to identify the deceased as Sentakona Milton Ziyane (53) of Ngculwini, outside Manzini. The information about the man’s identity was sourced from important documents which were found on the crime scene, which included his national identity card. Standerton Police Spokesperson Captain Fanie Nhlabathi believes the man was targeted for the car. He said the man’s injuries were unimaginable. “We suspect the man was strangled to death by his attackers,” he said. Speaking during a telephonic interview yesterday, Nhlabathi disclosed that Ziyane was from attending a meeting at Newcastle, when he came across his attackers while headed for his place of residence in Evander.
Investigators were able to trace people who may know Ziyane  using some of the contacts saved on his mobile phone.

The Standerton police mouthpiece said a woman from Evander, who knew the deceased, told detectives that she last heard from Ziyane when he was driving through the small town of Verdekoff in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday night. From then, the woman said she never heard from him as his phone suddenly went off. She only became aware that the man had been killed after she received a call from the police on Tuesday. She was invited to report to the Standerton Police Station, where she arrived in the company of one of the deceased’s male friends. The pair was then taken to a mortuary at the local public health facility, where they positively identified the deceased. “We were hoping the woman would again report to the police station to assist in our bid to locate the man’s relatives, but she hasn’t been helpful in that regard,” explained Captain Nhlabathi.

Police in the neighbouring country are still searching for the killers, who remain at large. Initial interviews conducted by the police had not sparked any leads, and as a result, Captain Nhlabathi pleaded with anyone with information about the incident to contact him at +277 8583 0371. He said they were still having it difficult locating the man’s relatives in the kingdom, because the friend and the woman who initially appeared to have some knowledge about the deceased did not have any clues. When approached for comment yesterday, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba said they were yet to get a report on the incident.
