OVER 34% OF EMASWATI ENGAGE IN SEX FOR CASH

MBABANE – Is sex for money taking over the lives of people in our society? The latest findings of the Eswatini Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2016/2017 have revealed that about 34.14 per cent of the population engaged in sexual intercourse with the person who gave them money.


The study was conducted by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) in partnership with the World Bank and is the main and official source of data that enables estimation of monetary and non-monetary indicators of the well-being of the people of Eswatini as well as estimation of poverty and inequality indicators.


The study also discovered that 97.88 per cent of the population liked to have sex with the person who gave them money.
The survey implementation was in such a way that 3 456 households were sampled and 3 355 were interviewed, which shows a response rate of 97 per cent.


About 773 of the households were sampled and interviewed in the urban areas, while 2 582 were from the rural areas.
According to the whole analysis of the sexual behaviour of the local population, the median value of money received from outside the household in return for certain favours stood at E300.


“The percentage of the population who use a condom when engaging in sexual intercourse with the person who gave them money stands at 89.70,” states the report.
About 3.49 per cent of the population was discovered to have been drunk when having sexual intercourse with the person who gave them money.


Another glaring discovery by the study is that the percentage of the population who have ever gone for HIV test with the sexual partner stood at 37.12 per cent.
However, there is a positive in terms of HIV awareness as the report discovered that the percentage of the population who were discovered to have ever gone for an HIV test stood at 91.38 per cent.
