COUNTRY NOT READY TO LEGALISE DAGGA - WHO

MBABANE – Swaziland needs to get informed evidence on cannabis before legalising it.

This was the assertion made by World Health Organisation (WHO).

According to WHO Health Promotion Officer Dr Kevin Makadzange, they supported evidence-based decisions before approving them. Considering Dr Makadzange’s statement, it looks like Members of Parliament ( MPs) might have to wait much longer as dagga would not be legalised anytime soon in the country.

Dr Makadzange said there was still a lot that the country was required to do before passing it into an Act and then into policy.
This follows the adoption of the report on dagga by MPs on Monday, after working on it for a year and six weeks. The legislators adopted the report during a debate that took place in the House of Assembly.

After a motion that was moved by Nkilongo MP Hans Steffen last year March, a select committee headed by Hhukwini MP Saladin Magagula was appointed to investigate the possibilities of the country issuing licences to special farmers for medicinal and commercial use of cannabis.

Makadzange said drugs are classified into different classes and some of the drugs were used for certain conditions.
He said with the use of cannabis in drugs, there were those benefits but there were other safer medications which could be used instead.
According to Makadzange, for treatment of cancer, they could use other drugs and also the treatment of asthma without the side effects that you get from cannabis.

He said you cannot compare Salbutamol with cannabis oil for the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Salbutamol is the international genetic name for Albuterol used to treat asthma. It relaxes the smooth muscle in the lung and dilates airways to improve breathing.

It is used in the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The inhaler enables the drug to reach deep into the lungs for maximum benefit.
According to Makadzange, Salbutamol was as good as the cannabis oil but it was free from the side effects one could get from dagga.
He said if one treated asthma or cancer with dagga, it works but they end up being hooked to it.
