MBABANE – Prince Phuhlaphi has been implicated in the unlawful issuance of khonta certificates to undeserving Asians.

It is alleged that the prince colluded with Phindile Khumalo, the senior Assistant Secretary to the Secretary of the Nation, who has been arrested in connection with the unlawful issuance of khonta certificates to Asians.

Khumalo who is currently behind bars, is facing seven charges of contravening Section 42 as read with Section 35(1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 2006, seven counts of forgery and one charge of theft. Her bail is being vigorously opposed by the Crown.
The alleged involvement of the prince in the scandal was disclosed by Sergeant Akhona Dludlu, who is the principal investigator of the matter.

“Khumalo, as the mastermind of this horrendous act, performed this crime in common purpose with former National Secretary, Prince Phuhlaphi, and a certain Sisana Mkhabela who is employed as a cleaner at the King’s Office,” submitted Sergeant Dludlu. He told the court that after processing the fraudulent khonta certificate, Khumalo would allegedly send Mkhabela (cleaner) to the Asian nationals, whose meeting spot was Lobamba Post Office and Mahlanya complex.

According to Dludlu, Mkhabela would then hand over the fraudulent khonta certificates to the Asians who would then give her money.  She would allegedly then give the money to Khumalo. “Khumalo, not to be outdone by the establishment of the Citizenship Board, devised a strategy and colluded with the former National Secretary (Prince Phuhlaphi) who retired in the year 2007,” alleged the investigator. Khumalo, who allegedly backdate the stamps to the period when Prince Phuhlaphi was still in office and she reportedly had him sign the fraudulent khonta certificates.

Dludlu also alleged that the khonta certificates were signed in places like Lugogo Sun and The Gables Complex, among others.
