MBABANE – It’s on! The Television Licence Consortium will today visit several homes in the Manzini Region to check if occupants have paid their TV licenses. This was revealed by the Project Co-ordinator Phumelele Dlamini during the fourth TV licence draw yesterday at the Times of Swaziland boardroom.

Dlamini revealed that they were targeting between 10-20 homes in that region. She said they would, for a start, do random checks in Manzini, Matsapha, and Malkerns. She stated that the exercise would begin with a briefing from the Manzini Police then proceed with the random checks. She made it clear that they were not targeting anyone and that was why they would do random stops.
“Anyone who will be found without a valid TV licence will be arrested,” Dlamini said.

She stated that they would do the random checks in the presence of the police.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed that the police would today be checking if people paid their TV licences. Mamba, when asked if they would be making immediate arrests, said they were obligated by law to do so. He said any person who violated the law stood to be arrested.

Mamba stated that the consortium had warned people and advised them for a long time to pay their TV licences. He said the money expected from TV owners was not that much as they only had to pay for last year and this year. A TV licence costs E180 per year. Those who have to pay for this year and last year are those who have been paying for the years before 2017.

“You only pay once a year, there is no need for police to run after people, we appeal to them to pay,” Mamba said.
Last week, a team of 28 police officers and 10 prosecutors were selected as part of a task team that will be conducting door-to-door visits to bring to book those who have not paid their TV licences. This was labelled as the second phase of the TV licence collection project.
