MBABANE – The Swaziland National Association of Teachers election race is on. While the rest of the country will be embarking on the National Elections to be held later this year, SNAT will also be in the process of electing a new National Executive Committee (NEC).

This year the organisation will be overhauling its entire National Executive Committee (NEC), Board of Trustees (BOT) as well as all other bodies that are within SNAT structures.

Each NEC member has a four year term in office. Prior to the coming election, every two years, the elections of certain positions within the NEC were carried out.
During the last conference held in 2014, it was resolved that the elections to be carried out in 2018 within the organisation would be conducted differently. Unlike in the past years, the Times SUNDAY has been made to understand that the election of members to fill certain positions within the NEC will not be staggered this year but an entire new NEC would be voted in and they would serve for four years.

In the past, every two years new members were elected into the NEC to replace those whose term of office have expired. For example; when a new president was elected, the Deputy President, would have two years in office and still have two more years to serve.

This development was confirmed by the SNAT Secretary General Zwelithini Mndzebele when contacted by the Times SUNDAY. He said that staggering of elections has been stopped. “This is one of the resolutions made during the SNAT national conference of 2014,” he explained.

He said all members were informed that the last staggered election would be carried out in 2016 and those who were elected into office including himself, were informed that they would only be there for two years. “Everyone who wants to be a member of the NEC in 2018 will be elected as all positions will be vacant,” he said.

Mndzebele urged all teachers to partake in the process in their numbers as participation would ensure that the right candidates are nominated. He further advised teachers to ensure that they elect responsible members as they have always done, who will ensure service delivery to the masses.
SNAT has a mandate to improve the profession, socio-economic status of teachers, enhance collective bargaining for teachers and encourage maximum participation and dynamic provision of quality education to the learner.
