MANZINI – Go home! This is what Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) administration said to end the recent class boycott that students engaged in.

The institution has since released all government-sponsored first-year students from the Faculties of Education and Nursing.

This was immediately effected yesterday morning. The announcement was made through a memorandum dated February 14, 2018, and signed by the Registrar Stanley Ngqwane.

The memo was communicated to the government-sponsored students during a meeting that was convened by the institution’s management in the presence of the Student Representative Council (SRC). Worth noting is the fact that privately-sponsored students will continue with lessons while their colleagues are away pending the release of their allowances by government.

According to SRC President Zamokuhle Mamba, this was puzzling because it remained unknown how this was going to be possible, especially because when exams come, the first years will be expected to write at the same time with the others. With the institution’s decision, Mamba said there were many questions than answers.

In the memorandum, it was also stated that the institution’s Senate was cognisant of the continued delay of allowances disbursement which had resulted in financial challenges for the first-year students and further the boycott which was deemed illegal.
For the seven days since the boycott started, the memo stated that some students were affected because there were sometimes disturbances emanating from the commotion.

“Deliberate acts of violence and  threats to both human life and property by the boycotting students cannot pass unnoticed. The SRC, though using unconstitutional means by persistently convening illegal meetings leading to flouting of the constitution, has tried to intervene to address this situation,” read the memo.
