MANZINI - A 50-year-old woman might be disabled for life after she was knocked down by a company vehicle while cleaning.

The incident happened yesterday morning at Second Street in Matsapha. The woman was involved in the accident while she was cleaning the veranda at Phutfumani Couriers and Freight, a division of the Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation ( SPTC), where she is employed.

According to eyewitnesses, the cause of the accident was a black VW Golf that was following a Toyota Hilux vehicle belonging to Phutfumani Couriers. The witnesses said the company car had already indicated that it was about to stop adjacent to the institution’s premises.

The eyewitnesses said the VW Golf was moving at a high speed, yet it followed closely behind the company vehicle from the Mahhala direction. Subsequently, when the Toyota Hilux slowed down to turn right towards the company’s premises, the black car smashed it from the back and pushed it beyond the fence that secures the area.

It passed the concrete platform onto the veranda where the woman was cleaning and further hit the door of the building before it came to a halt.
In the process, the woman was hit by a heavyweight gate when it collapsed and she got under the vehicle.
Witnesses said the woman lay unconscious on the floor and she only made movements after the gate was removed from her.

“She was still when I removed the gate but only started wailing shortly thereafter. I guess she was in shock,” said a witness.
The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries as her right thigh was ripped and a thigh-bone protruded. Her left arm was swollen. She was reportedly rushed to hospital.
