MBABANE – High school graduates will need to be extra careful before enrolling in some local institutions of higher learning.

This follows that the Swaziland Higher Education Council (SHEC) has shut down four institutions of higher learning in the country, which have not been granted recognition.

The institutions which have been closed down for not meeting the required standards are the African Prime Institute of Science and Technology (APIST), Corporate Development and Training Centre (CDTC), Providence International Training Centre (PITI) and Management Training and Development Institute (MTDI).

About 17 colleges were granted temporary authority to establish and operate in line with Section 19 of the Higher Education Act, while three institutions were granted full registration in conformity with Part IV of the Act.

SHEC Executive Secretary, Mboni Dlamini said they had to close the institutions as the extent of the discrepancy was very bad.
Dlamini said SHEC had the responsibility to develop and implement a system of quality assurance for higher education.

This covered among other areas; registration, accreditation, institutional audits, quality promotion and standards setting.
He said the closed institutions had challenges centred around staff and infrastructure, as it had to support delivery and policies around teaching and learning.

Others were assessment, quality assurance and admissions, as they admitted students without considering the requirements. He said the decision of the council was to give the institutions time to start afresh and reconfigure their structures and programmes to be in line with the required criteria.
When reached for comment on their landlines, management of the closed institutions could not be reached as the calls were restricted.
