MALKERNS – Two men, including a teacher, who were allegedly ferrying dagga, died after they were involved in a nasty accident while escaping from police.

According to Malkerns Station Commander Dumisani Dube, who was with his Traffic In-Charge Rambo Nhlengetfwa during the briefing, a VW Polo sedan approached a team of police officers during the early hours of Wednesday.

The police were conducting a roadside check at St Andrew’s at 1am on Wednesday, looking for unroadworthy vehicles, vehicles ferrying illegal items and drink- drivers among other illegalities when they stopped the vehicle. However, the Polo did not stop at the spot where the police had mounted the roadblock.

It was gathered that the vehicle, which only had the two occupants, only stopped at a distance, about 30 metres away from the police.
When two police officers approached the vehicle, the driver sped off, with the car’s headlights off.

“However, the police did not chase or follow the vehicle. Later on when they were patrolling around Malkerns, they discovered that the same vehicle which had sped off had been involved in an accident along the Malkerns-Luyengo Public Road at Esigayweni. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the VW Polo had collided head-on with an Isuzu LDV, which was travelling in its own lane. Suspicions are that the VW Polo stayed on the right lane, instead of the left, crashing on the Isuzu in the process, which also had two occupants,” Dube added.

The two VW Polo occupants, one Nkosingiphile Sifundza, who is a teacher by profession at Manzana, and Mandla Magagula, both aged 32, died on the spot. They were taken to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, where they were both confirmed dead by medical doctors.
