MANZINI – A serial rapist may be on the loose in the Lubombo Region as two elderly women died after being attacked and raped while in their homes.

In the first incident, the elderly woman, estimated to be in her late 60s, was attacked at her place of abode around Siphofaneni in the Lubombo Region on Christmas Eve.

A source privy to information on the incident said the elderly woman, who was employed as a cleaner in one of the restaurants in Siphofaneni, was attacked by an unknown man on Saturday night while in her home where she was living alone.

The source said the man broke into the elderly woman’s house through the tattered door at around 1am on Christmas Eve and attempted to rape the defenceless gogo. He said in the process, a fierce fight ensued and the man, who saw that the elderly woman was overpowering him, took a dish with urine and splashed it on her face before grabbing her and threw her on the bed.
“He then raped her and later bolted out of the house.”

The source said during the confrontation, neighbours heard the woman shouting for help three times but thought that it was drunk people from the neighbouring bars as it was Christmas Eve.

Thereafter, the source said luckily, the elderly woman managed to crawl from her house to one of the nearest neighbours to seek help and she was taken to the police station where a statement was recorded before she was rushed to the hospital.

He said during questioning by the police, the neighbours mentioned a prime suspect to the matter and the officers handling the case carried out an investigations with the aim of bringing the suspect to book. The source said meanwhile, the elderly woman was discharged from hospital and went back home.
