MBABANE – “Yimali, yinyuku all the way.”These were the words of the National Commissioner of Police, Isaac Magagula, during a television (TV) licence paying event held at the Police Headquarters yesterday.

The TV Licence Collection Consortium might collect over E1 750 000 from police officers alone in the TV licence collection exercise, that is if they all pay for at least two years’ fees. According to the Royal Swaziland Police Service Annual Report, 2016, there are about 4 871 police officers in the country while a TV licence is E180 per year.

The consortium stands to collect the said amount if the regional commissioners heed to Magagula’s directive to encourage officers to pay their dues. During the event, the national commissioner led by example as he was the first to pay followed by senior officers.
He stated that all police officers were encouraged to pay as they had to be seen as leading from the front when it comes to compliance with all laws in the country.

“To the regions here represented by regional commissioners, I direct that you organise similar initiatives as this one in your regions where your subordinates will be encouraged to register and pay for their TV licences with yourselves as regional commissioners leading from the front,” Magagula said.

Magagula explained that the police service had joined hands with the Swaziland Television Authority (STVA) in its drive to encourage a culture of paying for TV licences by those who owned and used TV sets. He said they were demonstrating their commitment and support for the TV licensing initiative and added that it would not be exemplary of them to propagate one message to the public and act in a directly opposite manner.
