EMVEMBILI – The families of maidens who died on August 28, 2015 in an accident while attending the Reed Dance now live in fear after their children’s graves were tampered with.

Three maidens namely Sekwanele Smoto Mthethwa (12), Setsabile Dlamini (14) and Phiwokuhle Tsabedze (11) were among maidens who died two years ago in a horrific accident that claimed the lives of 13 people in total. The three children were buried near their parental homes at Emvembili but since then, their surviving relatives claim their lives have not been peaceful.

Joyce Mthethwa, the mother of Sekwanele, said trouble started when a tree suddenly fell on her daughter’s grave.
She said this appeared like an accident but later, the grave then appeared to have been tampered with.

Mthethwa said she then reported this to the police at Horo Police Post in fear that some people were tampering with the graves.
“The police then escorted us to the graveyard so that we could see what exactly was happening there,” said Mthethwa.

She also revealed that all three girls were related and that they died because they had been standing together at the back of the truck  during the accident, when another truck rammed into the one they were travelling in during the Reed Dance.
Patience Dlamini and Siphiwo Tsabedze, the mothers of Setsabile and Phiwokuhle also expressed concern over the grave tampering, particularly about even the tombstones falling.

They also said the matter was reported to the Emvembili Umphakatsi.
However, the acting Chief, December Dlamini, said the matter had not been formally reported to him.
Other senior residents confirmed having heard about the matter but were reluctant to speak on record and referred questions to the authorities.
