PIGG’S PEAK – The danger of stray cattle on the country’s roads has once again come under the spotlight been highlighted as a woman was burnt to death inside a vehicle that had ploughed into livestock.

The woman, whose particulars could not be ascertained at the time of compiling this report was a passenger in the vehicle, a Honda Fit when it burst into flames after knocking down three cattle.
The gruesome accident is said to have happened at around 4am yesterday. There were two people inside the vehicle, including a man who was driving the car. The driver survived the fatal accident but the woman remained trapped in the vehicle and burnt to death.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle is said to have hit the first cow and the driver lost control of it.
It then went on to hit two more cattle and then caught fire. Within a few seconds, the whole vehicle was engulfed in flames. A huge burst was heard after the vehicle had hit the two cattle.
“He was injured but he managed to get out of the vehicle,” said an eyewitness referring to the driver.

The impact of the accident was loud enough to attract nearby residents and some of the motorists who then called for help. Some of the motorists stopped to assist the woman but they failed to pull her out of the burning vehicle. She died in the flames as the vehicle continued to burn.

Superintendent Khulani Mamba, the Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, confirmed the incident. Mamba said it was the residents who also helped the man to get out of the burning vehicle, however, they failed to remove the woman from the vehicle. Accidents caused by stray cattle are not uncommon as recently, a mass prayer was held along the Madlangempisi/Matsamo Highway.
This is one of the roads where fatal accidents, due to cattle, are very common. Though a majority of the victims survive the accidents, many are left with permanent injuries.
During a recent trial, a resident of Nyakatfo told Senior Magistrate Siphosini Dlamini that it was impossible to prevent accidents caused by stray cattle.
The man, who had been arrested after his cattle caused an accident, blatantly told the magistrate that lack of fencing along the highways, to prevent livestock from straying into the road, was contributing to this. He said attempts to fix this problem by residents were being hampered by thieves who steal the wire fencing for personal use.
