NHLANGANO – Everybody seems to be killing everybody in the kingdom these days. Just when the country is still reeling from the shock of the gruesome murder of two women, who were allegedly killed by their partners on Wednesday, hardly three days later, a man was brutally assaulted to death, apparently by three enraged pupils in a frightening case of road rage.

The pupils from one of the schools in the outskirts of Nhlangano are aged between 22 and 24. The vicious attack on the 37-year-old man occurred shortly after 6pm on Saturday while the man was driving a herd of cattle home at Qinisweni, about 8km to the east of Nhlangano.
The genesis of the violent attack was when a car which the youngsters were travelling in accidentally ploughed into the herd of cattle, killing one beast in the process. Witnesses said the car was also damaged as a result of the accident. An eyewitness said immediately after the crash, three fuming boys alighted from the vehicle and unleashed a tirade of abuse against the bewildered man.

The witness said from that moment the trio started kicking and punching the man all over the body. The man reportedly attempted to flee but unfortunately stumbled and fell into a ditch next to the road. The witness said one of the boys lost control and followed the victim. He said the man was in a squatting position when the assailant kicked him hard around the throat, causing him to fall back to the ground.

Three passengers from a kombi which was passing by are said to have tried to intervene, but the attacker could be seen repeatedly punching and kicking the victim. The bystander said in his fit of fury, the young man proceeded to stomp the victim viciously while he kicked and writhed desperately. “He even stoned him as he lay defencelessly on the ground,” narrated the stunned onlooker.

Later, the kombi passengers were able to stop the incensed young man but it proved a little too late for the victim, according to the witness. It appeared he had already died as he lay motionless on the ground. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter but the man showed no signs of life. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Meanwhile, residents who later gathered at the scene ensured that the attackers did not flee until the arrival of the police. Upon the arrival of officers from the Nhlangano Police Station, the trio were put in the back of a van and taken into custody.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed a group of people assisted in the apprehension of three young men linked to the violent attack on a 37-year-old man of Makhonza while at Qinisweni. He praised the angry crowd for exercising restraint by not taking the law into their own hands. He also revealed that all three boys were charged with the man’s murder and that their arraignment was expected soon.
