MANZINI – Public transport operators are all out to fight the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. They have since rejected a statement made by Minister Lindiwe Dlamini on the proposed formation of route companies by the ministry.

The public transport operators have actually demanded an urgent meeting with the minister where they want to make themselves clear that they want the process to be stopped immediately.  Any unsatisfactory actions or ‘negative’ response from the minister could trigger a mass strike in the industry.

The operators rejected the minister’s statement during their meeting which was held yesterday in Manzini and they made it clear that they want the proposed formation of route companies to take over the country’s congested routes to be stopped with immediate effect.
The public transport operators also want the minister to have a say on their motion of passing a vote of no confidence against the Road Transportation Board (RTB).

A well-placed source within the public transport sector said they agreed to send their representative to meet the minister as soon as possible to make an appointment that they want to meet her over the matter because they did not understand what she said in her statement about the proposed formation of route companies by the ministry.

“In fact, they were clear that they do not want the proposed move and demanded that it should be stopped immediately,” the source said.
The source further said if the minister fails to adhere to their demands, the operators agreed that they would park their vehicles until their calls were met. “If the minister fails to meet us or give a satisfactory explanation to our demands, we will be forced to park our vehicles and march to the head of the ministry,” the source said.
