MANZINI – The Road Transportation Board’s (RTB) days in office could be numbered as members of the public transport industry have passed a vote of no confidence against the Board.

The vote of no confidence was passed during a public transport operators’ meeting which was held on Friday.
A source within the public transport industry said the meeting was attended by all public transport operators ranging from taxis, for-hires, trucks, buses and kombis among others.

He said the main grievance of the operators was that the Board had allegedly gone beyond its core duty of issuing permits as it was allegedly interfering with the operations of their businesses.

“In fact, the feeling among us is that the Board is using a strategy to take business from individual operators and give it to organisations like the proposed route companies for congested roads in the country,” the source said.

He said after the vote of no confidence was passed, they sent representatives to register their grievances and resolution to the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Lindiwe Dlamini. The source said the meeting with the minister was supposed to be held yesterday but because she was committed to other national duties, she sent the principal secretary (PS) in the ministry to represent her in the meeting.

“The representatives registered our concerns with the PS and asked him to convey them as they were to the minister, who should then respond by issuing a statement at least by tomorrow (today),” the source said.

Meanwhile, Duma Msibi, the Chairman of the Road Transportation Council, said he would only confirm that they met the ministry yesterday, which was represented by the PS and they relayed some issues which they expect the minister to respond to.
