MANGWANENI – While women stood in shock and children peeped through windows, men engaged in a search party for an injured truck driver.

This unfolded at Mangwaneni last night, after a truck driver walked away from an accident scene that left him and two passengers, one male and a female, severely injured. According to eyewitnesses, the truck, which was carrying a load of river sand, was driving down the steep Mangwaneni Hill when it overturned, resulting in the loading base being ripped off and landing upside down. Witnesses narrated that the driver and male passenger were plunged out of the truck through the windscreen, while the woman was trapped inside. After the truck came to a standstill, residents quickly moved in to rescue her and immediately called the police and paramedics.

Residents who had heard a loud bang as the truck overturned, related that they came across the truck driver bleeding from most parts of his upper body, walking further away from the accident scene. They described him as wearing a yellow t-shirt, limping, with both hands firmly pressing his abdominal section and repeatedly saying the words, “Cishe safa,” which means we almost died. When asked why they did not assist him, the residents who were all female, said they feared that he would retaliate as he looked traumatised.

The man was last seen around 7pm and had not been found an hour later. By that time, the two passengers had already been whisked away to hospital by paramedics.
The truck owner was shocked what his truck was doing at Mangwaneni before being involved in the accident. The police arrived when reporters were about to leave the accident scene.
